English

Money creation and credit allocation are important transmission channels in the economy. This study empirically examines the dynamic relationship between liquidity growth and key macroeconomic fundamentals—inflation, GDP, and interest rates—in Iran, China, and Germany over the period 1973–2023. The three economies were selected because of several common features—namely, bank-based financial systems and a substantial government role in economic affairs—as well as historical experience of war or international sanctions, particularly in Iran and China. Using panel-data econometric techniques, the study estimates long- and short-run relationships. The long-run estimates indicate that inflation is positively and statistically significantly associated with liquidity growth, whereas GDP and interest rates do not show statistically significant long-run relationships. The estimated error-correction terms are negative and statistically significant across all three countries, consistent with a stable adjustment process toward long-run equilibrium following short-run deviations. Germany exhibits the fastest estimated adjustment speed (approximately 0.80 per year, or 80 percent), while China displays the slowest (approximately 0.57 per year, or 57 percent); these differences may reflect variations in financial flexibility and policy responsiveness. In the short run, the estimated coefficients of the explanatory variables vary considerably across the three countries, suggesting country-specific monetary transmission mechanisms. Overall, the comparative findings suggest that economic performance may depend not merely on the volume of money created but also on its sectoral allocation and end use; in Iran, liquidity growth appears closely associated with inflation.
